Gwen Hardie’s work is about light, shadow, colour and the act of perception.
She uses oil paint to blend infinitely nuanced tonal and colour gradations between background and foreground, as if under a magnifying glass. Each painting presents a mesmeric colourfield that appears to radiate - expanding outwards - receding inwards, creating an illusion of varying depths of field.
Born in Scotland, Hardie lived and worked in London and Berlin before settling in New York City in 2000. Her work is held several public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Council, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
